Nanotechnology For Dummies

Nanotechnology For Dummies
Publisher: Wiley | Language: English | ISBN: 0764583689 | 384 pages | Data: 2005 | PDF | 7.7 Mb
Description: This title demystifies the topic for investors, business executives, and anyone interested in how molecule-sized machines and processes can transform our lives. Along with dispelling common myths, it covers nanotechnology's origins, how it will affect various industries, and the limitations it can overcome. This handy book also presents numerous applications such as scratch-proof glass, corrosion resistant paints, stain-free clothing, glare-reducing eyeglass coatings, drug delivery systems, medical diagnostic tools, burn and wound dressings, sugar-cube-sized computers, mini-portable power generators, even longer-lasting tennis balls, and more. Nanotechnology is the science of matter at the scale of one-billionth of a meter or 1/75,000th the size of a human hair Written in the accessible, humorous For Dummies style, this book demystifies nanotechnology for investors, business people, and anyone else interested in how molecule-sized machines and processes will soon transform our lives Investment in nanotechnology is exploding, with $3.7 billion in nanotechnology R&D spending authorized by the U.S. government in 2003 and international investment reported at over $2 billion

Protein Nanotechnology: Protocols, Instrumentation, and Applications(Methods in Molecular Biology Volume 300
Humana Press | 1588293106 | Edition - February 1, 2005 | PDF | 480 pages | 13.4 MB | 646 MB

Leading experts in nanobiotechnology comprehensively review the most recent advances in instrumentation and methodology, as well as their applications in genomics and proteomics. The authors provide a wide variety of techniques and methods for dealing with protein functions and structures at the nanoscale level, including nanostructured systems, nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes and nanowires, optical nanosensors, and nanoelectrodes. Among the highlights are techniques for the in vivo tracking of biochemical processes using fluorescent molecular probes and nanosensors, and the exploration of biochemical processes and submicroscopic structures of living cells at unprecedented resolutions using near-field optics. Also discussed is the development of nanocarrier methodology for the targeted delivery of drugs whose shells are conjugated with antibodies for targeting specific antigens.

Artificial Cells: Biotechnology, Nanomedicine, Regenerative Medicine, Blood Substitutes, Bioencapsulation, Cell/Stem Cell Therapy

Artificial Cells: Biotechnology, Nanomedicine, Regenerative Medicine, Blood Substitutes, Bioencapsulation, Cell/Stem Cell Therapy
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing | Language: English | ISBN: 9812705767 | 484 pages | Data: 2007 | PDF | 4.5 Mb

Description: This is the first book that provides a comprehensive review of the entire area of artificial cells. The author, a pioneer of the field, invented the first artificial cells some 50 years ago and has continued to carry out active research in this field. Since then, there have been explosive research activities around the world on artificial cells, especially in fields related to biotechnology, nanomedicine, cell therapy, blood substitutes, drug delivery and others. However, instead of the term artificial cells, many authors use other terminologies such blood substitutes, bioencapsulation, liposomes, nanoparticles, and so on. As a result, any meaningful literature search for a complete idea of the present status of the whole field of artificial cells is impossible. Furthermore, the fact that papers in this highly interdisciplinary area are published in numerous journals specializing in chemistry, medicine, surgery, bioengineering, and others, makes literature search even more difficult. Books in this area are mostly multi-authored, describing very specific and narrow areas. Therefore, many who enter this field for the first time cannot find any book that describes laboratory methods and procedures needed for starting their research. This monograph is written to fill this gap. Based on his 50 years of work and an interdisciplinary background, the author has managed to include all those areas in artificial cells that are disguised under different terminologies. Since this is a very large area, he starts each chapter by giving a detailed overview and has included more than 1000 references to facilitate easier literature search of this highly interdisciplinary area. Detailed examples of the author s own research are given and methods and procedures are described in detail. Readers interested in a detailed overview of the whole area can read from cover to cover but omitting the methods section at the end of each chapter. On the other hand, those entering this area of research will find the detailed methods and procedures very useful.
